Walmart Marketplace Approval Guide for Pakistani Sellers
By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce
Walmart Marketplace is the second-largest online marketplace in the US and has far fewer third-party sellers than Amazon. That makes it attractive, but unlike Amazon you cannot just sign up and start listing. Walmart reviews every application and declines many of them.
This guide explains what Walmart looks for, how sellers based in Pakistan usually qualify, what to prepare, why applications get rejected, and what to do in your first month after approval.
Who can sell on Walmart Marketplace?
Walmart Marketplace is built for businesses that can sell and fulfil to US customers to Walmart's standards. In practice, Walmart's review looks at:
- A registered business with a US business tax ID (an EIN) and matching W-9 information. Walmart runs separate programmes for sellers registered in some other countries, but Pakistan-registered businesses generally apply through a US entity.
- Marketplace or ecommerce experience, such as an established Amazon, eBay or Shopify store with real sales and reviews.
- Products that fit Walmart, with valid GTINs (UPC codes) and outside Walmart's prohibited and restricted categories.
- US fulfilment and returns, either through Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) or a US warehouse or 3PL that can meet Walmart's delivery promises.
- Consistent details across the application, tax documents, bank account and website.
Walmart's exact criteria are not published in full and change over time, so treat this as a checklist rather than a guarantee.
The usual route for sellers in Pakistan
- Form a US LLC and get an EIN. Most sellers choose Wyoming or New Mexico; see our Wyoming vs Delaware comparison.
- Open a US business account or a supported payout account in the LLC's name. Walmart pays out to a US bank account or through Payoneer.
- Build a track record. If you have no marketplace history, launch on Amazon US or a Shopify store first. Walmart wants to see that you can ship on time and keep customers happy.
- Set up US fulfilment. Choose WFS or a US 3PL and get a US return address.
- Prepare your catalogue. Confirm UPCs, gather images and product data, and check every product against Walmart's restricted list.
- Apply through the Walmart Marketplace seller application.
Documents and details to prepare
- LLC formation document (Articles of Organization) and EIN confirmation letter
- W-9 information exactly matching the IRS records for your EIN
- Your passport for identity verification
- Business address and US return address
- Bank or Payoneer account in the LLC's name
- Links to your existing marketplace store or website, with sales history
- Product categories, estimated number of SKUs and how you will fulfil orders
- GS1 company prefix or UPC certificates if you are the brand owner
Some applications are also asked for a D-U-N-S number or extra business verification. Having one ready does no harm.
Why Walmart applications get rejected
From the applications we have reviewed, the most common reasons are:
- No marketplace history, or a store with very few orders.
- Mismatched information, for example the business name on the application does not exactly match the EIN letter.
- Personal details instead of business details, such as a personal email or a personal bank account.
- Restricted or unsuitable products, or a catalogue that is mostly unbranded goods without valid GTINs.
- No credible US fulfilment plan, for example shipping every order directly from Pakistan.
- An unfinished website without policies or contact details.
If you are declined, Walmart usually allows a new application later. Fix the likely reasons first rather than reapplying immediately with the same details.
After approval: your first 30 days
Complete Seller Center setup. Shipping templates, fulfilment centres, return settings, tax settings and the payment account.
List carefully. Upload items by spec file or bulk upload, fix every error, and check the Listing Quality dashboard. Walmart scores each item on content, price competitiveness, shipping speed and reviews. Better scores mean more visibility and a better chance of winning the Buy Box.
Use WFS for your best sellers. WFS stores and ships your stock and adds two-day delivery tags to eligible items, which usually improves conversion. Compare WFS fees with your 3PL costs for each product; bulky or slow items can be cheaper to ship yourself.
Watch your performance standards. Walmart measures on-time delivery, valid tracking, cancellations and returns. Falling below its standards can lead to warnings and suspension, so check Seller Center every day in the first weeks.
Start Sponsored Search slowly. Walmart Connect Sponsored Search can help new items get their first sales. Start with automatic campaigns on a small budget, then move proven keywords into manual campaigns.
Fees to expect
Walmart does not charge a monthly subscription for Marketplace. It charges a referral fee on each sale, which varies by category (typically around 6% to 15%). WFS fees, storage fees and advertising are extra. Build them into your pricing before you list.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Walmart approval take?
It varies. Some applications get a response within a couple of weeks; others take longer or ask for more information.
Can I use my Pakistani passport for verification?
Yes, as the owner of the US company. The business details must belong to the US entity.
Do I need a US warehouse?
You need US fulfilment that meets Walmart's delivery promises: WFS or a US 3PL. Shipping each order from Pakistan is not practical for Walmart's standards.
Can I copy my Amazon listings?
You can use them as a starting point, but Walmart has its own attributes, title style and image rules, so adjust each item.
