How to Avoid eBay Selling Limits and Restrictions as a New Seller
By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce
New eBay sellers are often surprised to find they can only list a small number of items, or that their account is placed under review soon after the first sales. This is normal. eBay limits new sellers until they show they can deliver what they sell, and it watches new accounts closely for fraud.
The good news is that limits rise steadily for sellers who do the basics well. This guide explains how limits work and how to avoid the problems that cause restrictions.
How eBay selling limits work
When you start, eBay sets a monthly limit on how many items you can list and their total value. The exact limits vary by account and are shown in Seller Hub (and under "Selling limits" in your account). Some categories, such as certain electronics, designer goods and tickets, have their own extra limits or need approval.
Limits are reviewed over time. eBay looks at how long you have been selling, how many sales you have completed, your feedback and your seller performance. You can also request a higher limit, usually after you have used most of your current limit and have a clean record. eBay decides each request; there is no guaranteed number.
What causes restrictions on new accounts
eBay restricts or reviews accounts when something looks risky. Common triggers:
- Selling far more than your history suggests: a brand-new account suddenly listing hundreds of high-value items.
- Late dispatch or missing tracking: buyers not receiving items on time.
- Item not received and not as described cases: especially several in a short period.
- Details that do not match: name, address, bank account and identity documents that do not line up.
- Several accounts linked together: for example, a new account connected to an older restricted one.
- Prohibited or restricted items: replicas, items that infringe trademarks, or categories that need approval.
- Dropshipping from other retailers: eBay's policy does not allow listing an item and then buying it from another retailer or marketplace to ship directly to your buyer. Wholesale dropshipping from a supplier you have an agreement with is allowed.
The habits that keep an account healthy
1. Start with items you have in hand
For the first months, sell stock you can physically dispatch quickly. You control the condition, packaging and dispatch time.
2. Dispatch on time with valid tracking
Set a handling time you can always meet, and upload tracking that the carrier scans promptly. eBay measures late shipments and tracking uploads, and they affect your seller level.
3. Describe items honestly
Accurate titles, item specifics, photos and condition descriptions prevent "not as described" returns. Mention any flaws clearly.
4. Communicate before problems become cases
If a parcel is delayed, message the buyer before they open a case. Reply to messages within a day. A buyer who feels informed is far less likely to complain.
5. Grow gradually
Increase your listings steadily as your limits rise rather than trying to max out from day one. A gradual pattern looks like a normal growing business.
6. Keep your details consistent
Use the same legal name and address across eBay, your payout bank account and your identity documents. For Pakistani sellers using a UK or US business, the business details must match the company documents exactly. See our guide to eBay UK managed payments for Pakistani sellers.
7. Watch your seller dashboard
Check the seller performance dashboard in Seller Hub weekly. It shows transaction defects, late shipment rate and cases closed without seller resolution, and warns you before your seller level drops.
If your account is restricted
- Read the message from eBay carefully. It usually says what eBay needs: documents, confirmation of identity, or information about your stock and suppliers.
- Provide exactly what is asked, clearly and quickly. Supplier invoices should show your name and match the items.
- Do not open a new account to get around a restriction. eBay links accounts, and this usually makes things much worse.
For sellers in Pakistan
Many Pakistani sellers sell on eBay UK or US through a business registered in that country, because payments and verification work more smoothly. Whether you need a company depends on your situation; see do Pakistani sellers need a registered company?. Never use another person's identity or account; it breaches eBay's rules and leads to permanent suspension.
Frequently asked questions
How long until my eBay limits increase?
There is no fixed timetable. Sellers with on-time dispatch, valid tracking, few cases and positive feedback usually see increases as they build a sales history over the first months.
Can I ask eBay for higher limits?
Yes. You can request an increase through your account or eBay customer service once you have used most of your current limit. Explain what you sell and where your stock comes from.
Can Markify help with a restricted account?
Yes. Our eBay account management service includes account health monitoring and help with restriction reviews. Also see what an eBay agency actually does.
