How to Protect Your Shopify Store from Fraudulent Orders

Running a global Shopify store from Lahore is incredibly lucrative, but it also comes with a unique set of risks. One of the biggest threats to your margins (and your payment gateway account health) is fraudulent orders.

A single chargeback doesn't just cost you the product and the shipping fee; it also costs you a $15-$25 chargeback fee from Stripe or Shopify Payments. Too many of these, and your merchant account will be permanently banned.

Here is how the Markify Ecommerce team protects our clients' Shopify stores.

1. Utilize Shopify's Built-in Fraud Analysis

Shopify actually has excellent built-in fraud detection. It uses machine learning to flag orders as Low, Medium, or High risk.

The Rule: We automatically cancel and refund any "High Risk" order. No exceptions. The risk of losing the payment gateway is never worth a single sale.

For "Medium Risk" orders, we look at the specific flags:

  • Is the billing address different from the shipping address? (Common for gifts, but requires a check).
  • Did the IP address originate from a different country than the billing address? (High warning sign).

2. Implement Fraud Filter Apps

If you are selling high-ticket items ($150+), the built-in system is not enough. We strongly recommend implementing third-party apps like Signifyd or NoFraud. These apps provide a financial guarantee: if an order they approve turns out to be fraudulent, they reimburse you for the chargeback.

3. The "Manual Verification" Protocol

For high-ticket dropshipping stores, our virtual assistants in Lahore run a manual verification protocol for any order over $500 that throws a Medium risk flag.

  • Email the Customer: A polite email asking them to confirm the order details. Fraudsters rarely reply; real customers appreciate the security.
  • Call the Customer: If the email bounces, we call the phone number on the order. If it's disconnected, we cancel the order immediately.

By implementing strict fraud protocols, you protect your bottom line and ensure the longevity of your business. If you need a team to manage your Shopify operations securely, reach out to Markify Ecommerce.
