Shopify vs WooCommerce for International Sellers: An Honest Comparison

By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce

If you are building an online store to sell abroad, the two platforms most people compare are Shopify and WooCommerce. Both can run a successful store. They make different trade-offs, and the right choice depends on your budget, your team and how much technical work you are willing to own.

The short answer

  • Shopify is a hosted service. You pay a monthly fee and Shopify handles hosting, security, updates and checkout. Faster to launch and easier to run, with less freedom to change how things work underneath.
  • WooCommerce is a free plugin for WordPress that you install on your own hosting. Full control and no platform subscription, but you are responsible for hosting, speed, security, updates and fixing conflicts between plugins.

For most small and medium brands selling internationally with paid ads, Shopify is the simpler choice. WooCommerce makes sense when you need deep customisation, already run a strong WordPress site, or have a developer on hand.

Comparison table

Shopify WooCommerce
Setup Sign up, choose a theme, add products Buy hosting, install WordPress and WooCommerce, configure
Monthly platform cost Basic $39 on monthly billing (less on annual), Grow $105, Advanced $399 Plugin is free; you pay for hosting, premium plugins and themes
Hosting and security Included and managed by Shopify Your responsibility; quality depends on your host
Updates Automatic You update WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins, and test for conflicts
Checkout Shopify's checkout, including Shop Pay WooCommerce checkout, customisable with plugins
Payments Shopify Payments where available, plus third-party gateways (extra Shopify fee) Any gateway with a plugin, no platform transaction fee
Apps and plugins Shopify App Store, mostly monthly subscriptions Huge plugin library, many one-off or annual licences
Customisation Themes (Liquid), apps; checkout changes limited on lower plans Almost anything, with PHP development
Content and blogging Basic blog WordPress is one of the strongest content platforms
Who fixes problems Shopify support for platform issues You, your developer or your host

Cost: look at the total, not the headline

WooCommerce is "free", but a well-run store usually pays for:

  • good managed hosting (cheap shared hosting struggles with ad traffic)
  • premium theme
  • paid plugins for subscriptions, product options, shipping rules and SEO
  • a developer for updates, fixes and speed work

Shopify has a predictable subscription, but apps add up. Many stores pay more per month for apps than for the plan itself. Make a list of the features you need and price both setups.

Payments for Pakistani owners

This is often the deciding factor:

  • Shopify Payments is not available to businesses based in Pakistan. A Pakistani-registered Shopify store uses third-party gateways and pays Shopify's extra transaction fee on those sales. With a US LLC or UK Ltd you may be able to use Shopify Payments or Stripe.
  • WooCommerce has no platform transaction fee, and plugins exist for Stripe, local Pakistani gateways and many others. You still need a gateway that accepts your business.

Speed and reliability

Shopify's infrastructure handles traffic spikes from ads and sales without you doing anything. WooCommerce speed depends on your hosting, theme, plugins and caching setup. A well-built WooCommerce store on good hosting is fast; a poorly built one on cheap hosting is slow and can go down during a sale.

SEO

Both can rank well. WordPress gives you more control over URLs, content structure and technical settings, and is excellent for content-heavy sites. Shopify has fixed URL patterns (/products/ and /collections/) and a simpler blog, but handles sitemaps, canonical tags and structured data automatically. In practice, content quality and links from other sites matter far more than the platform. See our Shopify SEO checklist.

Selling internationally

Shopify Markets lets you set prices, currencies, languages and domains per country from one store. WooCommerce can do the same with plugins for multi-currency and translation, which need configuring and maintaining.

Integrations with marketplaces

Both connect to Amazon, eBay, Walmart, TikTok Shop, Meta and Google through apps or plugins. Shopify's sales channel integrations for Meta, Google and TikTok are official and well maintained, which matters if you rely on paid social ads.

Who should choose which

Choose Shopify if you:

  • want to launch quickly and focus on products and marketing
  • do not have a developer on your team
  • will run paid ads and need a reliable, fast checkout
  • want platform support to call when something breaks

Choose WooCommerce if you:

  • already have a successful WordPress site with lots of content
  • need unusual product logic or deep custom features
  • have a developer and good hosting
  • want to avoid platform transaction fees and own every part of the stack

Can you switch later?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be migrated either way with migration tools or apps. URL structures differ, so set up redirects from every old product and category URL to protect your search rankings.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify available in Pakistan?

Yes, you can open a Shopify store from Pakistan. The limitation is Shopify Payments, which is not offered to Pakistan-based businesses.

Which is cheaper for a small store?

It depends on the features you need. A simple WooCommerce store on modest hosting can cost less per month, but once you add premium plugins and developer time, the gap often closes.

Our Shopify agency team builds and manages Shopify stores. If you are on WooCommerce and thinking of moving, we can plan the migration and redirects.
