Shopify SEO Checklist for New Stores (2026)

By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce

Paid ads bring traffic the day you switch them on, and stop the day you switch them off. Search traffic takes months to build but keeps coming without paying for each click. For a new Shopify store, getting the basics right from day one saves a lot of rework later.

Work through this checklist in order. Each step is something you can do in the Shopify admin without a developer, unless noted.

1. Set up the foundations

  • Remove the password page once the store is ready. Google cannot index a password-protected store.
  • Connect your own domain and set it as the primary domain in Settings > Domains. Shopify redirects the myshopify.com address to it automatically.
  • Verify the store in Google Search Console using a DNS record for your domain (a "Domain property" covers every version of the address).
  • Submit your sitemap. Shopify creates it automatically at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Add that URL under Sitemaps in Search Console.
  • Check the preferences page (Online Store > Preferences): set a homepage title and description, and remove any leftover "Coming soon" text.

2. Decide which page targets which search

Before writing anything, map keywords to pages so pages do not compete with each other:

  • Homepage: your brand plus your main category ("handmade leather wallets").
  • Collection pages: category searches ("men's leather wallets", "bifold wallets"). These are usually your biggest SEO opportunity.
  • Product pages: specific product searches ("slim RFID leather wallet black").
  • Blog posts: questions and guides ("how to clean a leather wallet").

Use Google's own suggestions, the "People also ask" box and, once you have data, the Search Console Performance report to find the words customers use.

3. Write proper titles and descriptions

Every product, collection, page and blog post has a "Search engine listing" section at the bottom of its edit page.

  • Title tag: put the main keyword first, keep it around 50 to 60 characters, and make each one unique. Example: Men's Leather Bifold Wallets | YourBrand.
  • Meta description: one or two sentences, about 150 characters, that would make someone click. Mention what makes you different (free delivery, handmade, warranty).
  • URL handle: short and readable, such as /collections/leather-bifold-wallets. Avoid changing handles after launch; if you must, tick "Create a URL redirect" so the old link still works.

4. Give collection pages real content

Many stores leave collection pages as a grid of products with no text. Add:

  • a short introduction above the products (two or three sentences)
  • a longer section below the products: how to choose, materials, sizing, care, and answers to common questions
  • links to related collections and helpful blog posts

Write for the shopper first. Repeating the keyword many times does not help and reads badly.

5. Make product pages complete

  • A unique description for every product. Never paste the supplier's text, because hundreds of other stores use the same words.
  • Specifications buyers need: size, materials, what is in the box, care, delivery time.
  • Several photos with descriptive file names (black-leather-bifold-wallet-open.jpg) and alt text describing the image.
  • Customer reviews through a reviews app, so real buyer questions and wording appear on the page.
  • A short FAQ for products that get repeated questions.

6. Understand Shopify's duplicate URLs

Shopify can show the same product at /products/handle and at /collections/name/products/handle. Shopify adds a canonical tag that points every version to /products/handle, so this is not a penalty risk. Most modern themes also link directly to the /products/ URL. If your theme does not, a developer can change the product card link so Google wastes less time on duplicate addresses.

Also check:

  • Out-of-stock products that will come back should stay live. Products discontinued for good should redirect (Online Store > Navigation > URL redirects) to the closest alternative or collection.
  • Tag-filtered collection pages and search pages do not need to be indexed; most themes already handle this.

7. Structured data

Structured data helps Google show price, availability and review stars in results. Most current Shopify themes output Product data automatically. Test a product page in Google's Rich Results Test. If price, availability or reviews are missing, check your theme and reviews app settings rather than installing several "SEO schema" apps that can output conflicting data.

8. Speed and mobile

Most of your visitors use phones. Remove apps you do not use, keep the first image light and avoid sliders at the top of the page. Our Shopify speed guide covers this step by step.

9. Internal links

Link from the homepage to your main collections, from collections to subcollections and best-selling products, and from blog posts to the collections they talk about. Use the main menu and footer for your most important collections. Pages with no internal links are hard for Google to find and are often left unindexed.

10. A blog that answers buyers' questions

A store blog works when each post answers one real question your buyers search for and links to the products that solve it. Two good posts a month beat twenty thin ones. Avoid publishing large numbers of AI-written or templated posts: Google's spam policies target scaled content made mainly to rank, and it can drag down the whole site.

11. Earn mentions and links

New stores rank faster when other sites mention them. Good sources are supplier and manufacturer pages, local business directories, genuine press coverage, collaborations with bloggers and creators, and your social profiles linking back to the store. Do not buy links.

12. Check progress monthly

In Search Console, watch:

  • Pages report: are your products and collections indexed? Fix anything marked "Not found" or "Redirect".
  • Performance report: which queries bring impressions, and which pages rank on page two and need improving.

Expect SEO for a new store to take several months to show meaningful results.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an SEO app?

Not to start. Shopify handles sitemaps, canonical tags and basic structured data. Write good titles, descriptions and content first. An app can help later with tasks such as image alt text in bulk or broken link checks.

How long until my Shopify store ranks?

For a new domain, expect several months for low-competition searches and longer for competitive ones. Content quality and links from other sites make the biggest difference.

Can you do this for my store?

Yes. Our Shopify agency service includes an SEO setup for new stores. You can also pair this checklist with our conversion rate fixes so the traffic you earn turns into sales.
