Shopify Conversion Rate Optimization: 15 Fixes That Matter

By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce

Many store owners try to grow by buying more traffic. Often the cheaper win is converting more of the visitors you already have. If a store converts 1.5% of visitors and you raise that to 2%, every rupee or dollar of advertising produces a third more orders.

These are the fixes we check first when we audit a Shopify store. Not all of them will apply to yours, so measure before and after.

Start by measuring

Before changing anything, look at Shopify Analytics:

  • Conversion rate overall and on mobile versus desktop
  • The conversion funnel: sessions → added to cart → reached checkout → completed purchase
  • Top landing pages and their conversion

Where the biggest drop happens tells you where to start. If few people add to cart, work on product pages. If many add to cart but few finish, work on the cart and checkout.

Product page fixes

1. Make the first screen on mobile do its job

On a phone, a shopper should see the product image, name, price, rating and the Add to Cart button without scrolling far. Remove anything that pushes these down, such as large banners.

2. Better photos

Show the product from several angles, close-ups of materials, the product in use, and something that shows scale. Real photos usually outperform heavily edited ones.

3. Answer questions in the description

Size, materials, what is in the box, care, delivery time and returns. Use short paragraphs and bullet points. Every unanswered question is a reason to leave.

4. Show reviews near the top

Put the star rating and number of reviews under the product title, with the full reviews lower down. Photo reviews are especially persuasive. Only show genuine reviews; fake reviews break consumer law and platform rules.

5. Clear delivery information on the product page

"Delivered in 2 to 4 working days" or an estimated date is better than "fast shipping". For Pakistani stores, mention COD availability and delivery charges clearly.

6. A sticky Add to Cart on mobile

On long product pages, a button that stays visible as the shopper scrolls makes it easy to buy at the moment they decide.

Trust fixes

7. Real contact details

A phone or WhatsApp number, an email address and a business address in the footer and on a contact page. Shoppers who cannot find a way to contact you assume they will not get help if something goes wrong.

8. A clear, fair returns policy

Easy to find, written plainly, and linked from product pages and the cart.

9. Professional basics

Consistent design, no broken links, no placeholder text, and an "About us" page that says who is behind the store. These small things signal a real business.

Cart and checkout fixes

10. Show the full cost early

Unexpected delivery charges at checkout are one of the most common reasons people abandon carts. Show delivery costs, or a free delivery threshold, on the product page and in the cart.

11. Use a cart drawer

A slide-out cart that lets shoppers continue browsing is usually smoother than sending them to a separate cart page. Add a free-delivery progress message if you have a threshold.

12. Offer the payment methods your customers expect

International buyers expect cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay. Pakistani buyers expect COD, and increasingly cards and wallets. See payment options for Pakistani Shopify stores.

13. Keep checkout simple

Shopify's checkout is already well optimised. Avoid adding unnecessary required fields or extra steps through apps, and allow guest checkout.

Speed and mobile

14. Make the store fast on phones

Slow pages lose visitors before they see the product. Remove unused apps, compress images and reduce tracking scripts. Our Shopify speed guide explains how.

After the first order

15. Recover abandoned checkouts and bring buyers back

Turn on Shopify's abandoned checkout emails, and use email or WhatsApp flows for welcome messages and post-purchase follow-ups, with the customer's consent. A buyer who has ordered once is much more likely to order again than a stranger.

For Pakistani COD stores

Conversion does not end at the order. Refused COD parcels cost you twice. Order confirmation, address checks and prepaid incentives can matter as much as anything above. See how to reduce COD refusals.

Test, don't guess

  • Change one important thing at a time and compare conversion over at least two weeks with similar traffic.
  • For stores with enough traffic, use A/B testing apps to test product page changes properly.
  • Watch session recordings for a few days to see where people get stuck.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate for Shopify?

It varies widely by product, price, traffic source and country. Compare against your own history and work on the biggest drop in your funnel rather than chasing an industry average.

Should I add urgency timers and popups?

Fake countdown timers and false "only 2 left" messages mislead customers and can break consumer protection rules. Genuine offers with real end dates are fine. Keep popups few and easy to close.

Can Markify audit our store?

Yes. Our Shopify agency service starts with a conversion and speed audit, and you can request a free audit any time.
