Amazon Listing Optimization Checklist for 2026
By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce
A good Amazon listing does two jobs: it gets your product shown for the right searches, and it convinces shoppers to buy once they click. In 2026, Amazon's shopping assistant Rufus and its search systems pay more attention to what a product actually is and what questions it answers, so complete, accurate and clearly written listings matter more than ever. Stuffing keywords does not.
Use this checklist on each important product, starting with your best sellers.
1. Keyword research
- List the words a buyer would type to find your product, including synonyms and different ways of describing it.
- Use Amazon's search bar suggestions, competitor titles, your Search Terms report in the ad console, and Brand Analytics if you have Brand Registry.
- Pick a main keyword (the most relevant, highest-volume phrase) and a set of secondary ones.
2. Title
- Follow the title rules for your category in the style guide.
- Amazon limits most titles to 200 characters including spaces, and does not allow the same word more than twice, or certain special characters, in most categories.
- Put the most important information first, because mobile search shows only the beginning: brand, product type, then key features such as material, size, quantity or colour.
- Write for people. "YourBrand Stainless Steel Cuticle Nipper, Precision Tip, With Case" is better than a list of keywords.
3. Main image
Amazon's rules for the main image:
- pure white background
- the product fills most of the frame (85% or more)
- only the product being sold, without extra text, logos or props
- high resolution. Images of at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side enable zoom, and larger is better.
The main image decides whether people click. Make it sharp and well-lit.
4. Additional images
Use all available image slots. A typical set:
- Product from another angle
- Key benefit infographic
- Size and dimensions, ideally next to a familiar object or a hand
- Product in use (lifestyle)
- What is in the box
- Material or quality close-up
- Comparison or how-to
- Video, if you have Brand Registry
5. Bullet points
- Five bullets, each focused on one benefit or concern.
- Start each with a short phrase stating the benefit, then explain with facts.
- Answer the questions buyers ask and the complaints in competitors' reviews.
- Include secondary keywords where they fit naturally.
- Avoid claims you cannot support, and avoid prohibited claims (for example, unapproved health claims).
6. Product description and A+ Content
If you have Brand Registry, A+ Content replaces the plain description for most shoppers. Plan it around buyer questions. See how to write A+ Content that converts.
7. Backend search terms
- In the US, the generic keyword field has a limit of under 250 bytes. Extra bytes can cause the field to be ignored.
- Add synonyms, alternative spellings and relevant terms not already in your title and bullets.
- Do not repeat words, use competitor brand names, or add irrelevant or offensive terms.
- Separate words with spaces; punctuation is not needed.
8. Attributes (item specifics)
Fill in every relevant attribute in the listing editor: material, size, colour, target audience, number of items, special features and so on. Amazon uses these for filters and for understanding the product, which matters for search, for Rufus answers and for comparison features. Incomplete attributes are one of the most common gaps we find in audits.
9. Variations
Group sizes and colours under one parent listing where they are genuinely the same product. Reviews are shared, and shoppers find the right option easily. Do not group different products together just to share reviews; Amazon does not allow it.
10. Price and Buy Box
- Check your price against competitors and against your margin after all fees.
- Make sure you win the Buy Box. Without it, most shoppers cannot buy from you directly.
- Use coupons or Prime-exclusive discounts strategically, not permanently.
11. Reviews and ratings
- Use the "Request a Review" button or Amazon-compliant automated requests.
- Enrol in Amazon Vine where eligible for new products.
- Read every negative review and fix the cause: product, packaging, listing or instructions.
- Never offer incentives for reviews or ask only happy customers.
12. Measure and repeat
Track for each product: sessions, unit session percentage (conversion rate), click-through rate on search, and organic rank for main keywords. Change one major element at a time and compare results over a few weeks. Use Manage Your Experiments for titles, main images and A+ Content when your traffic is high enough.
Frequently asked questions
How long until changes affect ranking?
Indexing changes can appear within days. Ranking changes depend on sales and conversion, so they usually take weeks.
Should I change my title often?
No. Make careful improvements and give them time. Frequent changes make results hard to measure and can disrupt what is working.
Can Markify audit our listings?
Yes. Every enquiry starts with a free account audit, and listing optimisation is part of our Amazon account management service.
