Amazon FBA Product Research Criteria for 2026: A Checklist for Pakistani Sellers
By Shaheer Khan, founder of Markify Ecommerce
Product choice decides most of what happens in an Amazon private-label business. A great listing and good ads cannot save a product with no margin or a market dominated by brands with thousands of reviews. This checklist is what we go through with clients before they spend money on stock.
Use it together with our step-by-step framework for finding winning Amazon products, which covers where ideas come from. This post covers how to judge them.
Criterion 1: Proven, steady demand
You want a product people already search for, not one you hope to create demand for.
- Check search volume for the main keyword with a research tool (Helium 10, Jungle Scout, Data Dive or similar) or Amazon Brand Analytics if you have Brand Registry.
- Check sales of the top sellers. If several listings on page one sell steadily, there is room for another good product. If one listing takes almost all the sales, it will be hard to break in.
- Check the trend over at least a year. Google Trends and tool history show whether demand is rising, flat or falling.
Criterion 2: Competition you can realistically beat
- Review counts: look at the spread on page one. A page where most listings have thousands of reviews is difficult for a new brand. A page with a mix, including some newer listings selling well, is more open.
- Big brands and Amazon itself: if Amazon or major brands own the top spots, ranking will be expensive.
- Listing quality: weak images, thin bullets and no A+ Content among top sellers are an opportunity.
- Advertising cost: check suggested bids for the main keywords in your ad console. Very high bids mean you will pay a lot for every sale while you build rankings.
Criterion 3: A margin that survives all costs
This is where most new sellers go wrong. Calculate profit per unit after:
- product cost and packaging
- freight, duty and forwarder fees to the Amazon warehouse
- Amazon referral fee (a percentage of the sale price, usually 15% in many categories, but check yours)
- FBA fulfilment fee, based on size and weight
- monthly storage fees, which are higher in Q4
- advertising per unit sold, which is high during launch
- returns and refunds
- your tools and other overheads
Use Amazon's Revenue Calculator for the fees. As a rule of thumb, if the product does not make a healthy profit before advertising, it will struggle once you add ads. Our FBA fees and profit guide walks through a full example.
Criterion 4: Price point
Very cheap products leave little room after fees. Very expensive products need more capital, carry more risk per unit and convert more slowly. Many private-label sellers aim for a middle range where fees take a smaller share and buyers still purchase without much hesitation. Work it out from your own numbers rather than a fixed rule.
Criterion 5: Size, weight and fragility
FBA fees, storage and freight all rise with size and weight. Small, light, durable products are cheaper to ship from Pakistan or China, cheaper to store and less likely to be damaged. Oversized or fragile items can work, but only with margins that cover the extra cost and risk.
Criterion 6: Seasonality
Seasonal products (Christmas decorations, summer pool items) can sell very well, but you have a short window, and leftover stock costs storage fees. If you choose a seasonal product, plan stock carefully, or balance it with year-round products.
Criterion 7: Compliance and restrictions
Check before you order:
- Is the category gated or does it need approval? Examples include some health, beauty, grocery and medical products.
- Are there product safety rules, such as children's products, electrical items, cosmetics or products that touch food?
- Is it hazardous (batteries, aerosols, liquids)? Hazmat review adds time and restrictions.
- Are there patents or trademarks on the design? Copying a patented product can get your listing removed.
Criterion 8: A real reason to choose you
If your product is identical to the top sellers, you can only compete on price. Read the 1-star to 3-star reviews of the top products and list the complaints. Can you fix them with better materials, a different size, a better bundle, clearer instructions or better packaging? That improvement is your listing's headline.
Criterion 9: Sourcing you can control
- Can you get samples from more than one supplier?
- Can the supplier meet your quality standard consistently?
- What is the minimum order, and can you afford to reorder before you run out?
Pakistani manufacturers are strong in textiles, leather, sports goods and steel instruments. See China vs Pakistan sourcing and Sialkot goods on Amazon.
Criterion 10: Room to grow
A product that can become a small range (more sizes, colours or related items) lets you build a brand, reuse your Brand Registry and cross-sell. One-off products are harder to grow.
A simple scoring sheet
Score each product from 1 to 5 on each criterion and write one line of evidence for each score. Comparing three or four candidate products side by side makes the decision far clearer than relying on gut feeling.
Budget: what to expect
Your launch budget depends on the product, but it must cover the first stock order, samples, inspection, freight, photography, trademark filing, launch advertising and a reserve to reorder. Many first-time sellers run out of money because they spend everything on stock and leave nothing for ads and reorders.
